Accused Nazi SS commander, 94-year-old Michael Karkoc (1990)

The Associated Press is reporting today that a top commander of a Nazi SS-led unit accused of burning villages filled with women and children, lied to American immigration officials to get into the United States and has been living in a modest house in northeast Minneapolis, in an area with a significant Ukrainian population, since shortly after World War II. Michael Karkoc, 94, told American authorities in 1949 that he had performed no military service during World War II, concealing his work as an officer and founding member of the SS-led Ukrainian Self Defense Legion and later as an officer in the SS Galician Division. The division that Karkoc reportedly commanded, was responsible for “liquidating” the inhabitants of the village of Chlaniow.

Cleveland, Ohio home where three women were held captive for 10 years

Yesterday, three women were found alive in a home in a Cleveland, Ohio neighborhood. There are still many unanswered questions of course but what we know at this point is that the women had vanished nearly a decade earlier. Amanda Berry was last seen after finishing her shift at a Burger King in Cleveland in 2003. It was the eve of her 17th birthday. Georgina “Gina” DeJesus disappeared nearly a year later, in April 2004. She was 14. Michele Knight vanished in 2002, at age 19. All three were kidnapped on the same street, just three miles from where they were found. A fourth victim, a six-year old girl, was also found and later discovered to be the child of Amanda Berry, born in captivity three years after Amanda was kidnapped. It is believed the women were tied up and chained inside the basement of the home (chains were found hanging from the ceiling of the home).

Mount Everest

On April 28, 2013, Simone Moro and Ueli Steck were forced to interrupt their acclimatization on Mount Everest and likely also their expedition project, after a fight broke out between the European team and a group of local Sherpas. At 23,600 feet, the climbers were punched, kicked, and stoned after being accused of “touching” the Sherpa’s fixed line. An official of the Cho-Oyu Trekking agency that organized the expedition, told Reuters that the three Europeans had failed to comply with a request from their Sherpa guides to stay at a location while the guides fixed the route. According to the European team…

A groomed ferret on steroids

Fresh news out of Argentina – a man who thought he had found a great deal on groomed toy poodle dogs ($150 each), took the dogs to a veterinarian who broke the news to him. “That’s no dog, it’s a ferret. And a really big one.” As it turns out, the practice is not unusual in Argentina where young ferrets and rodents are started on a chemical cocktail of steroids at birth, then groomed, and sold to tourists as “Brazilian rats”.

Bridge with "no" symbol over it

Residents in the Gölçük district of Kocaeli province in Turkey awoke on March 12, 2013 to find that their 22-ton metal bridge was gone – stolen by thieves in the middle of the night. The bridge was nearly 100 feet long and weighed an estimated 22 tons. Police believe the bridge was quickly split into segments and hauled away on trucks to sell for scrap metal, which at current market prices, would have netted the thieves about $11,000. Villagers had used the bridge to access their orchards, which are located on the other side of the small tributary.

Stolen train crashed into apartment building

A 23-year-old Swedish woman stole a commuter train from a depot outside of Stockholm on Tuesday. She then drove the train for about a mile to the end station of the railway line. Apparently knowing how to start and drive the train but not how to stop it, the train reached the end of the line, jumped off the tracks, and skidded for about 30 yards before crashing into a three-story apartment building, burying deep into the structure. No one in the apartment building was seriously injured but the woman was flown to a Stockholm hospital.

Omega Man Counterfeiter

// December 26th, 2012 // No Comments » // Unsolved

In the early 1970’s, ANACS (American Numismatic Association Certification Service) noticed an unusually high number of “high relief” coins entering the market. High relief coins are coins that are struck multiple times to produce extremely clear, concise contours. Suspicious that an unusually high quality counterfeiter could be the culprit, they began careful examination of the coins. If it weren’t for a minute “omega” symbol in the claw of the eagle on the coin, they would have never known they were counterfeits.
