FAA warns of unusual GPS interference this month from Top Secret China Lake weapons tests.

Map showing the area affected by the GPS weapons tests conducted at China Lake Navy Weapons Center in June 2016

Something unusual, and highly secretive, is going on in the Mojave Desert this month that has the capacity to wipe out aircraft GPS systems in an area covering nearly a dozen states. This week the FAA warned pilots that military tests were occurring this month at the Naval Air Weapons Center that could cause interference with GPS systems. They didn’t go into details of course, but whatever is being tested is huge. They noted that the tests, which are centered in Nevada’s 1.1-million-acre China Lake installation, could affect GPS systems in ten different states including Oregon, Idaho, California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, and Sonora (Mexico).

The warning was issued on June 4, only three days before the first test was conducted. Specifically mentioned in the FAA’s warning is the Embraer Phenom 300 aircraft which is not surprising given the Phenom is the only aircraft that has a stability system that relies on GPS to keep the aircraft in the air.

The first test was conducted on June 7, 2016, with additional tests taking place during daylight hours on June 9th, 21st, 23rd, 28th, and 30th. Already, residents in some states have reported unusual cellphone interference in the test area.

Meanwhile, United Launch Alliance is using a Delta-IV Heavy rocket to launch an NRO (National Reconnaissance Office) satellite (mission codenamed NROL-37) from Cape Canaveral in Florida – the opposite side of the country.   The payload is believed to be an Orion spy satellite that the agency uses to intercept signals in space as part of its intelligence-gathering efforts.  Launch date?  Yep, one of the dates scheduled for China Lake tests (June 9).  Coincidence or attempt at misdirection?

The China Lake Naval Weapons Center

China Lake Naval Weapons Center in NevadaThose familiar with esoteric research will recall that the China Lake Naval Weapons Center is the long-rumored location where homeless and “missing children” are taken for experimental research (some say via the MK Ultra program). One reader noted, “I have read about hangars lined with cages full of young children waiting to be programmed.”

China Lake, only a short distance from the top-secret Area 51 facility, conducts weapons experiments for all branches of the United States military. A reader familiar with the China Lake installation said:

“I have never seen any children, but I promise you there’s lots of weird sh*t going on there. Everyone on the base, including the officers, thinks there’s a secret underground base and nearby civilians are not allowed to mingle with military personnel. Everything there is very, very compartmentalized. Hangar 5 is completely chained off. No military allowed. Very secretive.”

Alternative theories being tossed about include a massive mind-control experiment in the southwest United States, a weather-modification experiment tied to the recent extreme-rain events, or potentially an offline period while new NSA GPS tracking software is installed in U.S. GPS system (most GPS systems in the world utilize the US’s GPS satellites).

China Lake, California

GPS testing is scheduled as follows and may result in unreliable or unavailable GPS signal.

A. Location: Centered at 360822N1173846W or the BTY VOR 214-degree radial at 059 NM.

B. Dates and times:

7 JUN 16 1630Z – 2230Z

9 JUN 16 1630Z – 2230Z

21 JUN 16 1630Z – 2230Z

23 JUN 16 1630Z – 2230Z

28 JUN 16 1630Z – 2230Z

30 JUN 16 1630Z – 2230Z

C. Duration: Each event may last the entire requested period.

D. NOTAM INFO: NAV (CHLK GPS 16-08) GPS (INCLUDING WAAS, GBAS, AND ADSB) MAY NOT BE AVBL WI A 476NM RADIUS CENTERED AT 360822N1173846W (BTY 214059) FL400-UNL DECREASING IN AREA WITH A DECREASE IN ALT DEFINED AS:

432NM RADIUS AT FL250

375NM RADIUS AT 10000FT

340NM RADIUS AT 4000FT AGL

253NM RADIUS AT 50FT AGL

THIS NOTAM APPLIES TO ALL AIRCRAFT RELYING ON GPS. ADDITIONALLY, DUE TO GPS INTERFERENCE IMPACTS POTENTIALLY AFFECTING EMBRAER PHENOM 300 AIRCRAFT FLIGHT STABILITY CONTROLS, FAA RECOMMENDS EMB PHENOM PILOTS AVOID THE ABOVE TESTING AREA AND CLOSELY MONITOR FLIGHT CONTROL SYSTEMS DUE TO POTENTIAL LOSS OF GPS SIGNAL.

Affected Centers:

E. Pilots are encouraged to report anomalies only when ATC assistance is required.

The time periods discussed in this advisory may be reduced or cancelled with little or no notice. Pilots are advised to check NOTAMs frequently for possible changes prior to operations in the area. NOTAMs will be published at least 24 hours in advance of any GPS tests.

Unusual weather events during tests

It was noted that unusual extreme, and unforecasted, weather events occurred within days after the June 9 test.  Surprising weather storms occurred in areas within a few hundred miles east of the test area and hit affected areas without warning.
